The race went well for me considering I had not put in as much training as I have for past marathons. Ran with my training partner to the half way point then left him in search of a better time.

Allie,

You really should have no trouble finding me in my pink spandex jumpsuit. I wear it to all the races.

Huans,

I am debating whether to run Utah Valley or DNews this summer. I am hoping for a BQ at St George if all goes well this summer.

Took the holiday weekend a little serious and did not run at all. So in spite of waking a little bit late went out for an approximately four mile loop from my house.

I live about 1 mile from the Jordan River Parkway, so most of my miles are done on the parkway near 7200 south. This morning I saw two mule deer hiding in the bushes near the water treatment plant at 7300 south.

JohnnyV,

Last year I put in more miles than I ever had, mostly in an effort to build base and cut some weight. I'm not sure what I will be shooting for this year. I'm terrible at making a plan and sticking to it.

Another nice morning on the parkway. The temperature seemed to be higher today. Because there were no deer close to the trail I resorted to bird watching.

I have decided quail have to be the funniest birds, a little bit like runners, thought they have the capability to fly they seem to prefer to run. Not the most efficient little guys, but they sure seem to work hard.

Did see a very pretty Red Winged Blackbird.

Didn't get near enough sleep last night. Then to top it off the rainstorm woke me at 4:00. I thought to myself that if it was raining that bad at 5:00 when the alarm went off I would push snooze and skip the run. So dreaming of a skipped run I went back to sleep. Sadly for me when I woke at 5:00 it was pretty clear and wasn't raining at all. So I dragged myself out of bed and proceeded to have a long slow run.

From RivertonPaul on Fri, Jun 12, 2009 at 13:14:21 from 67.42.27.114

From Rhett on Fri, Jun 12, 2009 at 13:42:24 from 170.215.58.122

I guess that explains why you two are so strong and fast...the Dutch genes.

Paul have you ever done Boston? You should totally do it next year. There is going to be a bunch of us there. I'm assuming my foot will be better by then.

JohnnyV, looks like all you have to do is match your SGM 2007 time and your in.

From RivertonPaul on Fri, Jun 12, 2009 at 13:48:39 from 67.42.27.114

Rhett, one of these days I will go to Bost, perhaps next year. It would make a difference to have friends like you there. I will have to see how things are with the family, work, etc. John can tell you, I'm very good at not committing to things too soon :) And you are right, JohnnyV wants to "requalify for Boston," having done it before.

Come on everybody sing along with me:

"Hold your head up, aah, hold your head up, aah, hold your head high."

What an interesting run. I started off on my twenty miler thinking about everyone running UVM and the Wahsatch Steeplechase and hoped for their sakes that the weather held. It turned out to be okay where I was until about 9:00.

As I started I turned on the mp3 player and headed out. The problem is the mp3 player did not start. So about twenty minutes in I finally got it going, or thought I did. Then after about a mile and half i started wondering why I was hearing the same song again. It turns out the mp3 player got stuck on a single song loop. Needless to say after about two hours of Argent - Hold Your Head Up, I will not be listening to that song for a while.

Looks like you still kept up some pretty good splits without the music. I forgot to do my Father's Day hinting...guess I'll just have to take what I get and smile. All I really want is to sleep in and not have to go to early morning church meetings, but no they are not cancelling the before church meetings like they did on Mother's Day. What's up with that? Maybe I'll boycot the meetings.

Hey, what are you running on Thursday (distance and pace)? I lost my running partner when he bought himself a bike!!!! :)

Nice job Vuyk!

Now ... listen good (this is important) ... STAY OFF OF ANY AND ALL LADDERS!!!! :)

From JohnnyV on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 15:50:54 from 204.124.13.151

Ladders?

Are you kidding, I just avoid service projects altogether. They are hazardous to my health.

8 on Thursday as fast as I decide when I run.

I will leave around 5:30. I can change things up.

From Teena on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 15:53:28 from 67.177.20.13

From Teena on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 16:34:33 from 67.177.20.13

From JohnnyV on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 16:35:01 from 204.124.13.151

They are slow. I think they are about 10s or even slower.

From Teena on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 16:36:16 from 67.177.20.13

Hmmm ...

Any chance you have seen Dye or Pearmain on the trail? What about Steph? I saw her the other day. I should give her a call.

From JohnnyV on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 16:42:10 from 204.124.13.151

I saw Dye this morning. He runs pretty early and usually goes north.

I saw Steph twice this week. This morning I saw her just north of 6200. Bpth times she has been running with someone, I did not recognize her. I usually see them about 6:15 - 6:30.

From Teena on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 16:45:16 from 67.177.20.13

Sweet ...

So maybe if I just run north instead of running south I will run into some company. Actually, I have been alternating between the directions. Hate that there are no drinking fountains on the south side though.

Burt, no one can makes sense of Johnny's way of keeping track of his time. I'm positive that 20 minute something is likely close to three miles. He has these crazy markers.

JohnnyV ... well next time don't stop and talk with me!!!! Of course I will be totally offended!!! :)

(I'm glad you chatted with me a bit today ... thanks!)

From RivertonPaul on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 16:11:57 from 67.42.27.114

I fear it is the same way he does accounting.

From JohnnyV on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 17:02:37 from 204.124.13.151

Burt,

I don't have a fancy smancy Garmin or anything like it so I just go by points on the trail I run. I know how fast, or slow, I should be at each point and use them to stay on track. There is usually a mile stretch where I check my mile pace, otherwise I just run, hopefully hard sometimes and easy other times, if not, at least I ran.

So yes Paul, prettty much the way I do accounting.

Blue Devils are always one of the favorites. They are good. I personally like the Phantom Regiment. Were they there? I totally missed it this year. I try to go but did not even look for the dates this year.

From Broaddwg on Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 13:50:08 from 24.151.140.18

I would suggest you shouldn't be too trusting of Google Earth. All of those programs are at least a bit inaccurate. Go with changes over time over the same distance. =)

From RivertonPaul on Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 15:06:39 from 67.42.27.114

I think Garmins are fairly accurate, especially if you take an average over a couple of runs. Or do what Sasha suggests and buy/borrow a measuring wheel and you can be Johnny accurate distance measuring man. :)

Maybe I should run your route sometime with you and check the miles.

See Paul Van Komen's report. (He had the splits as I ran with him the whole way. Thanks Paul for the encouragement at the end)

No, really as I look back I can not decide what went wrong the last part of the marathon. I thought I had trained enough to hold an 8 to 8:15 minute pace at the end but I crashed. The worst part is I am more sore than I have been for the past 10 - 15 marathons.

I do feel good that I kept running but wonder if one walk earlier might have made a difference. Will just have to chalk this race up to experience and set ou to do better (much better) at St. George.

Every time we have some kind of youth or Scout hiking adventer that is 20 to 30 miles over a few days I always tell the others that I'm just going to run the distance in a few hours and then camp at the end for the next few days and wait for them. No one else is ever very amuzed by that, but I think it would be a great day. Good for you for sacrificing some time for the Trek.

This meant that I was still in line as the race started. I was not worried knowing that the chip timing is what mattered. It was still difficult to see the masses start and go. When I finally got started  I had a good race, but not a great one. The splits and comments were as follows:

 Mile  2009 Comment
1.0 0:07:19.8 Best first mile at St George
2.0 0:07:39.1 Passing lots of people because of my delayed start
3.0 0:07:17.2 Feel fast because I continue to pass people

9.0 0:08:56.4 Fall into a trap of pacing with those around me
10.0 0:07:18.2 Kick it back up, but hard to adjust
11.0 0:08:20.1 Hard to keep my pace around without others to pace with
       12.0 0:08:04.2
       13.0 0:07:43.8 Pass the 3:45 group
       14.0 0:07:56.0

       21.0 0:07:17.1 Nice mile
22.0 0:08:39.1 Where did my energy go
23.0 0:08:02.2 Lost my motivation knowing 3:20 slipped by
       24.0 0:08:09.8 Too slow
       25.0 0:08:16.5 Again, too slow
26.2 0:10:34.4 Worst finish at St. George in my last five, but still my 5th best marathon.

Looks like you were running a great race and the wheels came off a bit at the end. I think we have all done that before. It had to be hard running a different pace than all those around you. I learned last year at SGM that there is definitely an advatage to running with a group at your pace. Congrats on another great marathon.

Resting. Ran six yesterday and felt okay after the marathon.

I want to thank everyone on the blog and Sasha for this resource, however, this will be my last post. I have decided not to continue to use the blog.

I am grateful for everyone's encouragement and the friends that I have made. I believe that this blog can really help those who want to improve accomplish that if they will take advice and listen. I also believe that because runners are so competitive, especially those willing to submit to 26.2 miles of pain, those on the blog need to pay better attention to their personal needs.

I know that my body has been able to take alot of pounding and miles. However, I continue to see those on the blog who are hurt or injured. I believe that some of this is the pressure felt from the blog. Everyone needs to realize that there are limitations and everyone's limitations are different.

I would encourage anyone to use the blog to improve, but would caution them not to use the blog as a competition. Build at your own pace and don't make unhealthy comparisons. I personally can look at Sasha's time with wonder and awe. I am sure that I will never be able to achieve what he can. I know that part of that is my inablility to dedicate myself like he has. However, some of it is pure genetics and I will never be able to compete at that level because of that either. (And believe me I am okay with that.) I still can look at those who can and marvel and applaud.

Again, I thank Sasha for his time and resources, and those who have befriended me and helped to encourage me. I look forward to seeing you on the trail and at races.

Good Luck and Run Healthy.

Thanks for the reminder JohnnyV. I agree that we runners can get too caught up in our running and forget about the things that are most important in life. Good luck to you in all your future running and life.

You're not alone in this line of thinking concerning the blog. I applaud you for it. GOOD LUCK and hope to see you on the road and future races.
